Bio:
Celina Anaya-Aguilera Mexican-American from Central Oregon. Movements that have impacted Hispanic expression inspire my work. Philosopher Gloria Anzaldua in her book Borderlands/ La Frontera: The New Mestiza presents “Border Arte” as a theory concerning the role of the artist in decolonization. Using conceptualism as a backbone I create sculpture, videography, digital art, paintings, and illustrations with an aim to explore this theory in my practice as an artist. In pursuing my education, I have understood that I learn best through art. By categorizing new information under an artistic approach, I have been able to capture difficult concepts. I have questioned my mind and my abilities because I was not a conventional student. As I struggled to learn and retain information, I made it my mission to understand myself and a way of learning that best suited me. I concluded that art is not only my passion and creative outlet but also a means of self-expression and self-discovery. Through my artistic ventures, I have delved into technology, language, humanities, and philosophy. Leveraging my skills as an artist, I have gained a deeper understanding of philosophical works such as Plato's "Republic." I visually interpret the text and establish a physical relationship to enhance its digestibility and practical application. My creations reflect an exploration of human nature, communication, and the interplay between my mind and body within this world.
I decided that art was my passion and my outlet, a way to express myself and a way to learn about myself.
I have learned much about technology, language, and philosophy through my ventures. And I know I still have much more to learn, but I will share what I know so far to continue to grow.
